Dance with Joy: The Ninth Step in Becoming

“And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.”

- Friedrich Nietzsche

May bursts onto the scene in full color - long golden days, warm air, and everything in bloom. This is the season of celebration, of shaking off what’s heavy, and of letting joy move through you, unselfconscious and alive. This month, we invite you to let yourself dance in whatever way that looks for you, and let joy take up space in your life.

Why We Dance with Joy

We are taught to treat joy like a reward - something we have to earn, or something that only belongs at the end of hard work. But joy is not a prize - joy is a practice. It lives in the small moments you allow yourself to feel light, even if nothing is “finished.” Even if nothing is “perfect.” When you let joy into your body, when you move with it, you create space for more. Joy is contagious, and when you dance with it, you remind others they’re allowed to feel it too.

And the more you practice joy, even in quiet or when it's hard, the easier it becomes to find. Like a muscle you strengthen or a path you wear into the grass, joy becomes something you can return to again and again. Dancing with joy is how you tell yourself: I am alive. I am allowed. I am here.

Joyful Movement

Let your body feel free: no rules, no right way, just joy.

What You’ll Need:

  • Music you love

  • A space where you can move without distraction

  • Optional: a candle, a scarf, or ribbon to hold as you move

Steps:

1️⃣ Put on a song that makes you want to move.

2️⃣ Close your eyes, take a breath, and let your body start to sway, however it wants to.

3️⃣ Let go of thinking about how it looks. Let your feet, arms, shoulders, and hips all move as they wish.

4️⃣ When the song ends, stand still for a moment and feel your heart beating, feel your smile.

5️⃣ Whisper (or write): I am allowed to feel joy, right here, right now.

Journal Prompts

For deeper reflection:

  • What moments in my life have felt full of joy?

  • What stops me from letting myself feel joyful now?

  • How does my body feel when I let it move freely?

This month, choose scents that feel bright, sparkly, and effervescent, like bottled sunshine:

Lemon & Verbena - citrusy and invigorating

Grapefruit & Mint - crisp and playful

🖤 Use a mist, soap, or candle before you dance to set the mood and invite lightness in.

We’ve learned not to fight it when we get stuck creatively, our rule is simple: put it away and come back to it later. Almost every time, what unlocks the flow isn’t forcing it, but turning on one of our party playlists and having a 20-minute dance break (which usually turns into much longer and ends with us doubled over laughing). Without fail, when we return to what we were stuck on, the solution seems to have appeared while we were busy moving with joy.

Joy doesn’t wait for everything to be perfect. It doesn’t ask for permission. It just asks that you notice it and let it move you. This month, may you dance with joy - in your kitchen, in your car, in your heart. Let it spill over. Let it shine. You deserve to feel light.
